As New Yorkers and visitors prepare to welcome 2025, the NYPD has put forth a detailed security blueprint for the annual New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, with over a million partygoers expected. ABC7 New York reports that Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch assured there are "no specific, credible threats to the celebration," but the city is taking no chances.
The security arrangements include an array of visible measures such as uniformed and undercover police officers, canine teams, and aerial surveillance through helicopters and boats, according to 1010 WINS. "The public can expect to see a tremendous amount of police resources," Tisch mentioned in the press briefing, with Mayor Eric Adams adding that behind the scenes the city works tirelessly to ensure everyone's safety, this year’s security plans have been fine-tuned to prevent incidents like the vehicle ramming attack at a Christmas market in Germany with sanitation trucks positioned strategically at key intersections.
One notable enhancement is the integration of drone operations; Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry announced that mobile drone teams will "monitor Manhattan and the city at large" with an increased number of drone teams within Times Square and its outer perimeter, as detailed by 1010 WINS. Tisch highlighted the presence of specialized units and tactics such as the Emergency Services Unit, bomb-sniffing canine teams, and aviation surveillance with an eye on bridges and landmarks to maintain a secure environment.
To further beef up safety, the NYPD will utilize sand trucks, blocker cars, and concrete barriers creating frozen lanes to mitigate vehicle threats Daughtry underscored that meticulous preparation is key given global threats, and though there are no credible threats to the ball drop festivity the city remains alert, especially since "we have been operating in a heightened threat environment since October 7th," as stated by Tisch. Governor Kathy Hochul has also directed state agencies to ensure that all celebratory activities happen peacefully with state police and the National Guard on elevated alert, as noted by 1010 WINS.
Logistical preparations are in place as well with street closures starting early on New Year's Eve day and designated viewing areas opening late afternoon for attendees, who would be screened at checkpoints by counterterrorism officers. Tisch urged spectators to plan accordingly for the weather and abide by restrictions on items like backpacks and alcohol. With a midnight countdown led by Mayor Adams and twelve performances scheduled throughout the event, attendees can look forward to a memorable transition into the New Year, all orchestrated under the vigilant eyes of law enforcement.
