Oakland's political landscape is about to experience a shift as Mayor Sheng Thao prepares to step down following her recall. As KTVU reports, Thao's tenure saw her grappling with challenges. This uphill battle was predicted after she narrowly won the mayoral race in 2022 by just 622 votes and encountered immediate adversity, including ex-OPD Chief Leronne Armstrong's dismissal and subsequent legal battle with the city and Thao herself.
During her final 48 hours in office, Thao focused on philanthropy, organizing a considerable toy donation drive for at-risk families. KTVU has chronicled her unwavering commitment despite the significant political turbulence that has characterized her time as mayor. She won the mayoral seat with the backing of labor and progressive groups, but her time in office has been mired by controversies ranging from an FBI raid to an ethics investigation that stems from her past role as a council member.
In what can be described as a testament to her resilience, Thao is not leaving without ensuring that her final acts in office reflect her dedication to the community. According to NBC Bay Area, more than 700 toys, representing about $20,000 in donations, were amassed through the mayor’s annual toy drive and are destined for 300 families facing eviction.
Despite the recall that saw 60% of Oakland residents vote her out of office, Thao has expressed no regrets. She stands by her decisions and the values that guided her team. However, she acknowledges the emotional weight of her premature departure. She has managed initiatives such as the sale of the Oakland Coliseum, which was aimed at staving off budget cuts but has been stalled, leading to criticism and further public safety budget reductions.
