Ohio is spotlighting older drivers this week. The state has dedicated the first week of December to the safety and awareness of older drivers on the road. A news release from Governor Mike DeWine's office urges Ohioans to focus on understanding and planning for the continued mobility of the state's senior citizens.
The Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Department of Aging are providing extra resources and tips to help assist this demographic, which, as reported, is clocking in as the fastest-growing segment of drivers nationally and in the Buckeye State. "Driving is a great way to maintain independence, and we hope older Ohioans and their loved ones reacquaint themselves with safe driving tips, especially during Older Driver Safety Awareness Week," said Governor DeWine, highlighting the necessity for vigilance and proactive approaches in understanding the needs of older drivers.
With individuals aged 65 and older comprising 23% of all traffic fatalities in the last three years, according to ODOT crash data, the week is posed not just to encourage safer driving but to shine a light, as, of course, safety doesn't just benefit those behind the wheel, but every road user in Ohio.
This year's theme, "Understand, Be Proactive, Plan," addresses everyone from policymakers to families and friends of the older drivers themselves. With a projected increase to over 4.8 million residents aged 65 and older by 2030, the focus is not just on current concerns but also on the longer road ahead. However, preparing for this demographic shift does not merely rest on the drivers; it extends to the entire community as it echoes the statewide commitment to ensuring that the roads are safe for all who use them – as emphasized by Governor DeWine's statement.
