The cost of cruising along the Ohio Turnpike is poised to rise in the new year, as toll rates for both passenger and commercial vehicles will experience an uptick starting January 1, 2025. Regular commuters and occasional travelers who opt to pay in cash or use credit cards will face a nearly 1 cent increase per mile for passenger vehicles, escalating from 9.6 cents to 10.4 cents per mile. Those utilizing E-ZPass will be subject to a minor elevation from 6.5 cents to 7.1 cents per mile on their journeys, as reported by cleveland.com.
It's not just the solo drivers feeling the economic pinch. Operators of heftier transport will need to budget for more sizable increases. Commercial vehicles using E-ZPass will see their rates surge to 22 cents per mile from the previous rate of 20.4 cents. On the other hand, cash and credit card rates are growing more substantially, to 27.6 cents per mile, from 25.6 cents, Spectrum News 1 elucidates. The hike, part of a multi-year scheme approved by the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission in April of 2023, takes into account operational costs, debt service, and essential capital upgrades necessary for maintaining the thoroughfare's infrastructure.
Traveling the full stretch of the turnpike, which spans 241 miles from border to border, will also burden wallets a tad heavier. For instance, E-ZPass users in passenger cars will see a full westbound trip cost increase from $17.00 to $18.50, while their cash and credit card counterparts will pay $27, marking a $1.75 rise. Trucking firms must anticipate a more robust elevation, with E-ZPass commercial vehicles now paying $57.50 and cash and credit card users shelling out $72.25 for the same full westward voyage, as calculated by Spectrum News 1.
However, the Ohio Turnpike Commission has pointed out that despite the incremental cost enhancements, toll rates on the Ohio Turnpike remain among the nation's least expensive. "Despite the rising costs of highway construction and bridge projects, the Ohio Turnpike’s toll rates still rank among of the lowest in the country," they assured in a press release. Furthermore, they highlighted a saving grace for E-ZPass users, who "will continue to save an average of 33% on Ohio Turnpike tolls compared to customers who pay by cash or credit card," a sentiment echoed from the press release by Spectrum News 1. As the turnpike relies not on taxpayer largess but on the tolls collected, this increase is pitched to keep the vital artery functional and efficient.
For those who frequent the eastbound lanes through the Eastgate Toll Plaza, E-ZPass users will notice their toll nudge up to $15.50 from $14.25 for the complete eastern corridor jaunt, and commercial vehicle rates will ascend to $48.50 from $45.00. Those paying with cash or credit cards will also face augmented costs for passenger and commercial vehicles, reaching $22.75 and $61, respectively. With anticipation of the forthcoming toll adjustments, travelers might start to weigh the economic benefits of an E-ZPass subscription, which still incurs a monthly charge of 75 cents and a one-time $3 transponder setup fee yet provides consistent discounts over the alternative payment methods. Notably, E-ZPass accounts set up through other states' tolling agencies are accepted in Ohio, though associated fees may vary, as detailed by Cleveland19.
