OKC Utilities Announces Final Round of Special Debris Collection for Southeast OKC in Wake of Tornado CleanupSource: City of Oklahoma

To help with recovery from the November tornadoes, OKC Utilities is adding a final round of debris collection for affected Southeast OKC areas. Starting on January 6, 2025, this service will give residents extra time to clear and set out storm debris. The City of Oklahoma announced yesterday that this will be the last chance for residents to use this special service.

"We understand that those affected by the tornadoes are dealing with a host of challenges as they work to restore normalcy to their lives," said Utilities Director Chris Browning in the city's announcement. He further noted that the extended collection provides extra time and support for the customers to get their debris collected. As of now, a total of 2,207 tons of debris have been collected. It's important for residents within the designated collection areas to have all debris curbside prior to the January 6 start date.

Regular trash and recycling services will continue as scheduled without any changes. Residents can check their regular bulky waste collection dates using the My Trash Day map. In addition to the disaster debris collection, normal bulky waste collection will proceed on its usual schedule and follow set-out guidelines. Residents without storm damage are reminded that standard fees will apply for piles larger than 4 cubic yards.

The third debris collection pass will start on January 6, with contractor crews beginning in the area near SE 89th Street and Sooner Road and then repeating the process. The Oklahoma City has provided guidelines for those still preparing debris: tree limbs should be cut to 10 feet or shorter, and debris should be placed in a way that doesn't block utilities or street access. Hazardous materials like motor oil or pesticides should be taken to the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. Residents can track the cleanup progress by visiting OKC's debris map, updated daily during collection periods.

After the final storm debris collection, regular bulky waste collection will resume on its usual schedule and follow the normal guidelines. OKC Utilities reminds customers that items containing freon require a separate collection request through their customer service line.
