A tragic multi-vehicle accident resulted in at least one fatality and left several injured on Highway 49 near the Helena-West Helena Bridge on Monday morning. According to information released on Facebook by the Coahoma County Fire Department, their teams, along with Pafford EMS units, were called to the scene of the crash at approximately 5:55 a.m. Coahoma County Fire Department noted the accident happened on the Arkansas side of the state line, prompting a mutual aid response.
The aftermath of the collision caused severe traffic disruptions, with a Mississippi traffic camera revealing that lanes going both directions were blocked, as reported by Local Memphis. The road has since been reopened. The circumstances leading up to the crash were further complicated by weather conditions, with dense fog settling into the area, which may have dangerously turned to freeze on the bridge.
Details of the crash are still being pieced together by Arkansas State Police. The police have confirmed one fatality stemming from the wreck. "Severe injuries," were also reported, and the injured parties have been transported to a Memphis hospital. Similarly, the Action News 5 report included the critical fact that the police consider freezing fog to have been a contributing factor in the accident.
Recovery and investigative operations have involved multiple agencies working to both clear the scene and support those affected. The Coahoma County Fire Department stated they "offered assistance as needed" to the Helena West Helena Fire Department. The names of the deceased and injured have not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Authorities continue to closely investigate to more fully understand the crash dynamics and to develop further safety measures for the Highway 49 bridge vicinity.
