A deadly fire that engulfed a south Charlotte apartment complex yesterday morning has culminated in the loss of one resident, and caused injuries among first responders. Emergency calls about the fire at The Crossing at Quail Hollow Apartments on Park Road were reported around 11:41 a.m., with fire crews arriving shortly after at 11:47 a.m., as per the Charlotte Fire Department's statements referenced in a WBTV report. Upon arriving, the firefighters encountered heavy smoke emanating from the apartment building's roof, prompting a second alarm to be issued for additional support.
The Charlotte Fire Department declared, that the fire was contained by approximately 12:30 p.m. Tragically, a body was found at the scene, and two firefighters have suffered minor injuries during the firefighting efforts and are undergoing evaluation, according to details provided by WCCB Charlotte. The fire's proximity to South Mecklenburg High School and the residential nature of the 12-unit building, which houses 14 people, drew concerns regarding community safety and the well-being of the displaced residents—prompting response from the American Red Cross to offer aid.
An update provided by QC News has pinpointed the blaze’s origin, concluding that it was accidental. The fire began on the rear exterior third-floor balcony and was caused by an unattended burning candle in a flower planter box. In a brief moment of reprieve amidst the tragedy, a firefighter managed to rescue an animal from the building, subsequently reuniting it with its owner. Estimated property and content loss from the incident stands at $175,000.
