The Orange County Veterans Services Office is championing the cause of military service members, ensuring that the more than 71,000 veterans residing in Orange County are aware of the vast array of services and benefits due to them. "If they don't know about them, they typically won't seek them out," said Program Manager Alnita Whitt, highlighting a critical gap in services utilization, which the office is ardently working to close through increased community outreach and education, as confirmed in a recent report by the Orange County Government.
Efforts by Whitt's team, which includes two senior counselors, four veterans counselors, and an administrative specialist, have been stepped up with initiatives like hosting town hall-like informational sessions at Orange County Public Libraries, where they address queries and present what resources are on offer along with the processing support provided, intending to resolve inquiries on-the-spot and to clarify the process involved in claiming the services due to them, this according to a statement Alnita Whitt shared with the newsroom.
Serving approximately 5,000 clients annually, the veteran's services team assists with claims ranging from disability, pensions based on medical need and income, and survivors' pensions to education benefits and state benefits. As outlined in their recent outreach campaign, the office serves as a nexus, providing a streamlined experience or a one-stop shop where veterans can ascertain all their entitlements.
In addition to the monetary benefits that reach millions per year, the Orange County Veterans Services Office collaborates with various local agencies and organizations to supplement services such as meals and mental health counseling. They not only inform veterans on matters such as funerals but also financial literacy through vetted referrals, which allows veterans freedom of choice without bias towards any particular agency, something Whitt elucidated in an interview with the newsroom.
For the many who may be in doubt, as per the county's news release, Whitt encourages a proactive approach: "There's no greater feeling than helping other people, so I say rather than assume you don't qualify, when in doubt, seek us out."
