As the first day of winter approaches, Oregon City gears up for a poignant evening to honor community members affected by homelessness who passed away in 2024. The annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial candlelight vigil, is slated for December 21 from 6-7 p.m., at Liberty Plaza, next to the Clackamas County Courthouse at 815 Main Street, according to Clackamas County.

This year's solemn occasion recognizes 36 residents of Clackamas County, a slight increase from the previous year's vigil which honored 30. The names of those who have died will be solemnly read out, followed by a candlelit ceremony and live music to encourage reflection among attendees, as per Clackamas County.

Instituted in 1990, the National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day coincides with the winter solstice, marking a time of remembrance across the nation. Cities from over thirty states as well as the District of Columbia have historically taken part in the memorials, acknowledging the struggle and loss within this vulnerable population.

The Homeless Solutions Coalition of Clackamas County, a non-profit organization, is co-hosting the event for the third consecutive year. For more information, one can visit the county's website at Clackamas County News.
