In a heartwarming act of holiday generosity, Orlando Magic and Osceola Magic players collaborated with Pepsi to brighten the season for over a hundred local children. According to a report by WESH, the young beneficiaries, selected from Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, each received $300 in gift cards for a shopping spree at the Princeton Street Walmart in Orlando. Paolo Banchero and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, prominent figures from the Orlando Magic, took center stage in the event, sharing moments with the kids as they picked out their gifts.
This annual tradition, stretching over ten years, has continued to expand and directly impact the lives of countless children from communities such as Parramore, West Lakes, Carver Shores, and Pine Hills. Banchero, participating for the second time, expressed his intent to always improve the experience. "My first year doing it, you know, it was only $100. A lot of kids, they ran it up pretty quickly, so I made sure I said next time I do this I'm going to up the price and let them spend a little more," Banchero stated, as per WESH.
The involvement of Caldwell-Pope, despite being newer to the Orlando community, illustrates a shared sentiment toward giving back. Proud of the organization's commitment to community engagement, Caldwell-Pope acknowledged the importance of such initiatives, saying, "It's a blessing, putting a smile on their face, being able to give them some time," in an interview by WESH. The players' efforts didn't stop at gift cards, with Papa Johns providing pizzas for the children following their spree.
Sponsors like Pepsi play a crucial role in these community-focused events. Noel Rodriguez, leading Pepsi’s retail sales business, highlighted his company's dedication to this cause, stating, "We love our partners like the Orlando Magic, like Walmart, and the Osceola Magic. We do a lot of stuff throughout the year." Fervent about making a tangible difference, especially during the festive period, Rodriguez shared his sentiments with NBA, "Being committed to events like this, especially this time of year where it's the holiday season and being able to provide a little bit of holiday joy for some kids in the local community, is just amazing."
Finally, the event serves as a reminder that the joy of the holidays can be spread wider through acts of kindness and that sports figures can impact far beyond the court. Jamie Merrill, president and CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, took pride in the longstanding partnership with Magic and Pepsi, remarking on their significant contribution to the region's children's welfare, as WESH reported.
