Jennifer Crumbley, mother of the Oxford High School shooter, is seeking release from prison while her appeal is pending. Her attorney, Michael Dezsi, stated that "It would be grossly unfair and unjust to keep Mrs. Crumbley locked up for years while this matter proceeds slowly (likely for years) before the appellate courts." The appeal, which challenges her involuntary manslaughter conviction related to her son Ethan Crumbley’s 2021 mass shooting, is expected to take several years to resolve, as reported by The Detroit News.
In a motion filed in Oakland County Circuit Court, Jennifer Crumbley's lawyer, Dezsi, argued that she had "no legal duty to the victims of her son's acts." He also claimed the prosecution withheld important evidence, including proffer agreements with two key school witnesses, which could have affected their credibility. Dezsi said, "The suppression of these secret agreements violates the most basic, well-understood duties of a prosecutor to turn over all evidence that is favorable to the defense or could be used for impeachment purposes," according to CBS Detroit and FOX 2 Detroit.
David Williams, Oakland County's chief assistant prosecutor, defended Crumbley's conviction, noting that "a jury of twelve individuals listened to testimony and reviewed countless pieces of evidence before they unanimously found her guilty as charged and she was sentenced by the judge accordingly" before finding him guilty. He also stated, "The legal issues raised by Jennifer Crumbley have already been heard and rejected by the Michigan Court of Appeals." The upcoming court hearing on January 8, 2025, will address Jennifer Crumbley's request for her son's release. The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office has not yet responded to the request.
