The unexpected twist of fate for Ed Rivas, a trach nurse with over 15 years of experience from West Valley, Peoria, started with a seemingly innocuous cut on his foot during a summer vacation in Florida that led to a dire medical situation upon his return to Arizona. According to 12 News, Rivas's condition escalated quickly as he and his wife Maria rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with MRSA, a notoriously resistant staph infection.
Compelled to make a critical and swift decision, Ed Rivas agreed to amputate his left leg below the knee after the infection had aggressively spread to the bone and entered his bloodstream, a move which has since dictated profound changes in his daily living, making routine tasks challenging but for his family's support, he has managed to cope through the arduous recovery, "There's so many little things that you take for granted that are tough to do now, but I have my wife and my two boys, and I lean on all of them a lot, so we're doing okay," Ed Rivas said to 12 News.
As described by AZ Family, Rivas underwent four surgeries initially aimed to save his foot but ended with amputation, his dedication as a nurse extends to his now personal journey, Ed's resolve is clear, "I hope to get a prosthetic and I do plan on going back to work without any restrictions, My goal is to get back to work," a determination echoed by his wife Maria, who admits the ordeal's gravity left her uncertain of his safe return home at times.
