Philadelphia authorities are on the lookout for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run that took place on Christmas Day in South Philadelphia. As reported by 6ABC, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when a man, believed to be in his 40s, was struck by a vehicle while walking along East Snyder Avenue near East Moyamensing Avenue. The victim, who has yet to be identified, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead shortly after medics arrived at the scene.
"The striking vehicle is described as a four-door silver or tan sedan," Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6ABC. According to witnesses, the man was walking in the street when the speeding driver struck him head-on. It remains unclear if the pedestrian was within the bike lanes on either side of the street at the time of the collision.
Following the crash, pieces of the car were discovered on the roadway, prompting investigators to gather video surveillance from nearby businesses in hopes of identifying the hit-and-run driver.
In a separate report by FOX 29 News, witnesses described the hit-and-run vehicle as a silver sedan with some front-end damage. An additional appeal for information was echoed by PHL17 News, urging anyone with knowledge about the incident to come forward. The Philadelphia Police Department is asking members of the public to dial 215-686-TIPS with any information that could assist the investigation into this tragic event.
