Philadelphia residents should prepare for changes as the Department of Streets has announced the start of the Hunting Park Avenue Bridge Removal and Fill-In Project. Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi confirmed that starting January 13, 2025, the bridge between Whitaker Avenue and G Street will be closed to vehicles for demolition and construction work, according to a release from the City of Philadelphia.

The project involves removing the superstructure, backfilling the area, replacing the roadway, relocating utilities, and resurfacing the road. Pedestrian access will be maintained, but drivers will face detours and delays.

As per the same release, advance signage was posted on Monday, to notify the public of the bridge closure. Detours will redirect eastbound and westbound traffic along Whitaker Avenue, Luzerne Street, and G Street to minimize disruptions. Drivers should also be aware of temporary "No Parking" signs to avoid towing.

The work, managed by South State Inc., is expected to be completed by Fall 2025. With a budget of $1.7 million funded by State Act 13 and City Capital funds, the project aims to minimize the impact on local businesses and residents. The Streets Construction Unit will work closely with affected parties to align construction schedules with their operational hours, according to the announcement.
