The City of Phoenix is ringing in the New Year by putting all hands on deck to ensure residents and visitors alike are well-informed about changes in city services during the holiday closure on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025. According to a news release on Phoenix's official website, those relying on the city's solid waste collection service should anticipate a shift in schedule, as the New Year's Day holiday will push curbside collection back by one day. Thus, with Wednesday's collections moved to Thursday—and so on—the revised schedule concludes with Friday's waste pickup occurring on Saturday, January 4.
Adding to the slightly altered rhythms of city life, the 27th Ave. and North Gateway transfer stations will also be closed on New Year's Day, and the city's Public Works Customer Contact Center is taking a holiday break, set to resume normal operations at 7 a.m. on January 2, per the City of Phoenix. If you're unsure which can to place curbside, call 602-262-6251 when the contact center reopens.
All Phoenix Public Library locations will close on Jan 1, but book drops remain open, and digital resources are available. Visit the city's website for more details. Parks and trails will stay open, but community centers will be closed. Check safety guidelines before heading out. The S'edav Va'aki Museum will be closed on New Year's Day. Public transit will operate on a Sunday schedule, but Express and RAPID services will not run, and some transit centers, like Ed Pastor, Sunnyslope, and Central Station, will be closed. For more information, check ValleyMetro.org or the city's transit page. Dial-a-Ride will continue to operate by reservation only from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Travelers flying out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport during the holidays should reserve parking in advance and check flight statuses. Arrive at least two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international flights. The PHX Reserve program can help with airport security. Look for Navigator volunteers in purple for assistance. Parking meters in downtown Phoenix will be enforced from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the holiday.
