In a heartwarming display of community spirit, local firefighters went above and beyond to make 3-year-old Beckham Botts' birthday special. Beckham, who is battling a rare cancer called neuroblastoma, has always admired firefighters. After his mother, McKenna Botts, reached out on social media, the Phoenix fire department honored him in a meaningful way, as reported by ABC15.
McKenna Botts had reached out to the firefighting community through Facebook, asking them to send birthday wishes to her son. According to ABC15, the response was not just in the form of videos from across the nation, but local firefighters also extended an invite to Beckham for a tour, where he got the opportunity to see a fire station up close and even manage the hose.
The story took a particularly heartwarming turn when Beckham visited Station 56 in north Phoenix. Firefighter and paramedic Michael Lorenz was one of the many who met with Beckham, and in a statement obtained by AZFamily, Lorenz stated, "He’s definitely a lot tougher than we are and he is a hero." The sentiment highlighted the resilience of the young boy and the strength of his parents in facing the challenges brought on by his condition.
Neuroblastoma is a cancer that develops in the nerve tissue of very young children, and Beckham's fight began even before his birth. The tumor was detected by ultrasound at 35 weeks gestation, and while it continued to get smaller with no treatment required, the diagnosis has been a heavy load for the Botts family to bear. The firefighters' gesture gave the family a momentary respite and a chance to see joy personified in Beckham’s excitement. "When you think of firefighters, you think of strong and brave. That’s exactly what I think of with my son too," McKenna Botts told AZFamily. To follow Beckham’s journey and his experiences with his heroes, the family has created a Facebook page where people can track his progress and offer support.
