The City of Phoenix offers residents an environmentally responsible way to dispose of their live Christmas trees, wreaths, and garlands, by turning them into compost at no charge. After the holiday season ends, these items can become a fire hazard or contribute to landfill waste, so the Phoenix Public Works Department is stepping in to help out by making composting services available, as reported by the City of Phoenix.
From December 26, through January 7, 2025, Phoenix citizens can drop off their live holiday greenery at designated spots in various city parks including Cactus Park and Cesar Chavez Park, plus others, with the requirement that all items be free of lights and decorations to ensure the composting process works correctly and produces a pure end product. Apart from the parks, the city also facilitates drop-offs at two transfer stations for those who might find them more accessible, according to the City of Phoenix Public Works Department's announcement.
It's important to note that this free composting service is provided exclusively for live items. Plastic and artificial trees are not accepted as they cannot be composted similarly.
