The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department's latest effort to maintain the integrity of the city's parks appears to be generating positive results, thanks to the introduction of a 24/7 hotline established in September for parkgoers to report concerns directly to Park Rangers. The line, which allows residents to detail problems in real time, has received over 120 calls since its inception, indicating vigorous community engagement in the conservation and safety of public spaces.
Accustomed to activities like skating, walking, and unwinding with a book under the sun, visitors such as Cassie have lauded the hotline's effectiveness. In a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, Cassie explained, "For a good part of the day, it's pretty relaxed, quiet and has sunshine on the other side. You can just pull out a blanket, read a book, watch a movie." However, the presence of trash, vandalism, and more troubling issues such as homeless encampments and drug paraphernalia have prompted other individuals like Ryan, to express their concerns with, "Often the best spots like this are overrun with homeless people or drugs,", he told MSN.
The hotline serves as a new tool, significantly aiding the Park Rangers who operate in pairs, covering the city’s 187 parks around the clock. Although there may be delays in response times due to staffing and the geography of their coverage, the Department is asking for patience from callers.
Despite the occasional wait for intervention, the hotline continues to be a robust resource for park visitors to report incidents of overdoses and other emergencies that may occur in these public domains. The hotline is available for anyone to use and can be reached at 602-534-9919.
