In Portage, a dog was rescued from an apartment fire on Longview Street yesterday afternoon. The Portage Department of Public Safety found the pet unresponsive but breathing. According to FOX17, the firefighters' timely actions saved the dog, which was hospitalized and listed in stable condition as of today.
The fire was caused by plastic bowls melting on a stovetop. The firefighters not only contained the fire but also saved the animal's life in the absence of the resident. Portage Department of Public Safety director Jeff VanderWiere said, "We are grateful that no one was injured in this incident, and we are especially relieved that the dog is recovering well." He also reminded residents about the importance of stovetop safety, as reported by WOODTV.
Multiple departments, including Texas Township, Comstock, and Oshtemo Township fire departments, assisted at the scene and with station coverage.
The Portage Department of Public Safety is continuing its investigation and encourages anyone with information to contact them directly or through Silent Observer, as per WZZM13. Residents can call (269) 329-4567 or (269) 343-2100, with more options available online.
