In what's unfolding as a distressing situation for pet owners, Morasch Meats of Portland has initiated a voluntary recall of a raw, frozen pet food that's been linked to an outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The issue came under scrutiny after the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) announced that the Northwest Naturals brand 2lb Turkey Recipe, a raw and frozen feline food, tested positive for HPAI. The product recall was put into motion following an indoor house cat's death in Washington County, caused by the H5N1 strain of the virus after consuming the said pet food.
According to the ODA's report, Dr. Ryan Scholz, the state veterinarian, stated, "We are confident that this cat contracted H5N1 by eating the Northwest Naturals raw and frozen pet food." He went on to explain that genome sequencing confirmed an exact match between the virus found in the pet food and that which infected the cat. Morasch Meats has, hence, recalled its products with specific "Best if used by" dates. Pet owners who have purchased this product, distributed across several states in the U.S. and in British Columbia, Canada, are urged to review their pet food supplies and dispose of any implicated products.
The health repercussions of HPAI extend beyond our feline friends, prompting monitoring of household members who had contact with the infected cat for flu symptoms by the Oregon Health Authority and local public health officials. Although no human cases have been connected to this incident and the risk to humans remains low, officials emphasize caution. Experts from state and federal agencies strongly advise against the consumption of raw or undercooked meats, raw dairy, and emphasize basic hygiene practices, such as washing hands after coming into contact with sick or dead animals.
Furthermore, amid the recent pet food contamination, the Oregon Department of Agriculture has taken a precautionary step to test milk from every commercial dairy in the state for the HPAI virus, despite not having any confirmed cases related to cow milk.
