Portland was the scene of a sizable police operation last Sunday, aimed at cracking down on drug and crime hotspots in East Portland. The Portland Police Bureau, in collaboration with several partner agencies, conducted a criminal interdiction mission leading to a laundry list of seizures and arrests, sweeping up drugs, guns, and stolen vehicles in the process. According to a press release issued by the Portland Police Bureau, the operation was backed by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office along with representatives from the U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI.
The crackdown targeted areas recognized for their high volume of narcotics activity, including multiple thoroughfares in East Portland which have become synonymous with the open drug trade, the police push, which sought to stymie the flow of illegal drugs and bring offenders to justice, was also considered some cases for federal charges, on the docket for December 15th all the way to 82nd Avenue, narcotics officers and the Neighborhood Response Teams played a pivotal role insiders say. Notably, during the busts, a suspect evading a traffic stop in a Dodge sedan managed a dramatic breakaway, smashing into a steel-and-concrete bollard post-collision near a shopping complex after an ill-fated attempt to veer away at high speeds - thankfully leaving no one injured. The rapid flight was cut short, though, as the individual's sprint across lanes was thwarted by law enforcement.
It was an operation that bore fruit in sheer numbers with the Police Bureau tallying 13 custodies, stacked alongside 17 felony charges and 15 misdemeanors, complemented by a smattering of criminal citations, arrest warrants - both felony and misdemeanor - and dozens of subject contacts, and vehicle stops. The mission did not end without its share of elusive suspects, as detailed in the report, with three vehicles managing to duck apprehension, two sparking chases ending in two firearms being confiscated, alongside sizable quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine.
