A bomb threat that led to the evacuation of a Publix supermarket and neighboring businesses in Sawgrass Village yesterday ended without incident after law enforcement found no cause for alarm. Details emerged as multiple sources reported on the situation that disrupted the suburban calm for a portion of the day.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO) spearheaded the response, which began around noon when it decided to evacuate the area as a precaution. According to a report by News4JAX, the SJSO's bomb squad along with explosive detection K9s from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, were called to the scene to investigate the potential threat. Amid the anxiety of the onlookers, nothing suspicious was ultimately uncovered by the responding units.
Following thorough checks of the premises, the SJSO provided an update at approximately 2:15 p.m., confirming that the area was safe. "Nothing suspicious was located," read the statement, as noted by Action News Jax. Both the supermarket and the surrounding shops in Sawgrass Village were subsequently reopened, returning normalcy to the shopping center that had been abruptly interrupted by the morning's events.
Appreciation for the cooperative efforts between the two sheriff's offices was expressed across social media. "Thank you to @JSOPIO Explosive Detection K9s for their assistance," said a social media post from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, as captured by a social media update. This gesture underscored the collaborative nature of local law enforcement in times of potential crisis. With the area cleared, businesses in Sawgrass Village appeared eager to make up for lost time, promptly welcoming back patrons once the all-clear was given.
