Powerball lottery fever was rampant in New York as an unsuspecting customer walked out of a Queens supermarket with a ticket now worth $256 million. According to ABC7NY, the ticket that clinched the jackpot was sold at Hua Lian Supermarket at 25-03 Parsons Boulevard. This win is noted as the state's largest windfall from the Powerball since 2020.
The lucky numbers 1, 31, 43, 55, 57, and the red Powerball 22, were drawn on Saturday night, and it was not immediately clear if the winner has come forward, as of yet. However, the winner has a choice to opt for an upfront lumpsum payment, a cool $123.5 million, before taxes, according to New York Lottery officials.
In light of the recent win, the Powerball jackpot has now been reset for the first time in months. Starting from $20 million for Monday's drawing, the game proceeds yet again to build anticipation and dreams of riches. Daily Mail reports that the cash value of the reset jackpot stands at $9.7 million, far less than the recent colossal winnings.
While this win is significant, it's not the year's highest – that title goes to an Oregon man with cancer, who won a staggering $1.32 billion on April 6. The previous largest jackpot of the year before that was more than $842 million, won in Michigan on January 1. It's interesting, though, that despite the high stakes on Saturday, there were no second prize winners, which usually bags a tidy million.
