On the evening of November 24, an unsettling incident unfolded on a United Airlines transfer shuttle bus at Los Angeles International Airport, involving Pervez Taufiq, an Indian American wedding photographer, and his family who were subjected to a barrage of racist comments from another passenger.
The woman's tirade, which included telling the family "Your family is from India, you have no respect, you have no rules," and accusing them of being able to "push everyone, push, push, push," was captured on video by Taufiq and has since gained attention on social media; Taufiq, in recounting the incident to FOX 11, emphasized his shock at the confrontation, stating that his hands were trembling and he was "floored" by what happened, while the woman, in a statement to KTLA, supplied a differing account, claiming Taufiq had earlier instigated an altercation.
This inflammatory exchange also saw the woman in question making obscene gestures and telling the Taufiq family that they are not American, with her declaring, "I'm American," to which Taufiq replied, "So are we," as reported by ABC7.
Taufiq's wife Nicole speaks out about the ordeal, lamenting not only the encounter but the bystanders' lack of response, expressing in comments on social media that the absence of support "felt like silent approval," explaining how such silence is not neutral but rather a choice which can inadvertently side with the aggressor, hence reinforcing the necessity of speaking up against hate of any sort, regardless how uncomfortable the act of intervening might prove. United Airlines has been contacted for comment, but at the time of reporting, they had no "additional information to share."
The family is considering pressing charges and hopes to identify the woman involved, whose behavior on the shuttle bus may lead to her placement on United's "no-fly list" according to statements made during the incident by United employees.
