In an expression of holiday spirit, Raleigh Water and its employees have stepped up to bring some joy to the lives of children in Western North Carolina still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Spearheaded by the empathetic drive of Michael Carpenter, a Raleigh Water employee with a penchant for community service, a toy drive was set in motion. Carpenter’s initative, which he had never undertaken before, garnered a resounding response from the community, with generous contributions flowing in from City of Raleigh employees and close to two dozen organizations throughout the region.

Carpenter's uncertainty about the success of his maiden venture was quickly allayed as the donations piled up. "It's about reaching out to kids we may never meet, but who need a little extra cheer during challenging times," Carpenter told RaleighNC.gov. The drive amassed over 1,200 unwrapped gifts, including 23 bicycles and four tricycles—helmets included—along with dolls, trucks, games, and books, ensuring a variety of choices for each recipient child.

In collaboration with the Pantheon Project and the Marines, Carpenter, along with his coworker Jeff Clark, took on the logistical challenges to ensure the collected gifts reached underserved children. The Marines carried out a plan to airdrop the gifts to various communities by today, ensuring the toys brought smiles and holiday magic even to the most remote parts of western North Carolina.

Gratitude is the prevailing sentiment, with Carpenter and his community of helpers deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support. These toys, marked by the community's goodwill, are set to create moments of wonder for many children this holiday season, regardless of the distances that separate them. "Knowing these gifts will bring smiles to countless faces and a touch of magic to the holiday season," Carpenter stated on RaleighNC.gov, acknowledging the collective effort that will underpin this year's festivities.
