A retired Detroit police sergeant has been taken into custody following the fatal shooting of his tenant during a landlord-tenant dispute, as stated by Deputy Chief Jacqueline Pritchett of the Detroit Police Department. The confrontation, which occurred yesterday afternoon in the 15900 block of Kentfield Street, escalated to violence around 2 p.m., leaving a man in his 40s with multiple gunshot wounds. According to a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit, the tenant was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities believe the dispute may have cascaded over an ongoing eviction process, during which the tenant reportedly made threats leading the landlord, a concealed pistol license holder in his 50s and retired eight years ago from the police force, who thought the tenant was reaching for a weapon asked him to show his hands and subsequently fired multiple shots although a weapon was not recovered from the scene. WXYZ's report notes that earlier in the day, officers had served an eviction notice to the tenant, who was unarmed when the landlord shot him.
The Detroit Police Department's Homicide Unit continues to investigate the scene, and although it is unclear whether there were any witnesses to the shooting, there were people present when police arrived, as per CBS Detroit. The recovered firearm and other evidences are expected to contribute to the package the police intend to submit to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for warrant consideration.
Deputy Chief Pritchett confirmed to the press that the shooter's weapon has been recovered. No further details have been released by police, and the case will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for further review and potential charges.
