In recognition of her commitment to combating governmental corruption, Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher has been honored with the Auditor of State Public Integrity Award. The accolade was presented by Ohio Auditor Keith Faber during the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association Annual Meeting in Columbus, highlighting Schumacher's collaborative efforts to bring corrupt public officials to justice.

Auditor Faber praised Schumacher's collaborative vigor, stating via Ohio Auditor of State, “Prosecutor Schumacher has worked hand in hand with my Special Investigations Unit (SIU) on cases that have led to convictions of public officials in Richland County” during the presentation of the award last Thursday. Faber emphasized Schumacher's fundamental role in ensuring those guilty of exploiting public funds are held accountable.

Under Schumacher's direction, the prosecutor's office has seen several successful prosecutions due to SIU investigations. These include the conviction of former Crestline Fire Department Chief Matthew Wells, who was handed a 60-day jail sentence in July 2024 and ordered to pay $26,384 in restitution and audit costs, according to a press release from the Auditor of State's office. His sentence was accepting payment from multiple public agencies for the same working hours.

In a separate revelation from the same investigation, a former Richland County Job and Family Services specialist was sentenced to jail for improperly securing benefits. "She takes public integrity very seriously and insists on accountability for public officials,” Randall Turner, SIU Director, told about Jodie Schumacher in the statement obtained by Ohio Auditor State. A third investigation concerning another public official discovered $16,614 due for recovery due to compensation claimed for non-working hours.

Striving for transparency and accountability, Schumacher's efforts aim to illuminate all fraud, waste, and abuse within government bodies. These efforts culminate in actions like these convictions, sending a clear message to public officials about the consequences of corruption. The awarded prosecutor could not be reached immediately for comment. Still, her dedication to integrity in public service is evidenced by the honor of the state auditor and her track record.
