The City of Sacramento has offered a glimpse into its efforts to address the issue of homelessness, sharing a new report that shines a light on actions taken over a one-week period. According to the Sacramento City Express, from November 25 to December 1, there were 459 calls made to the city's 311 service line concerning individuals experiencing homelessness.
In that same time frame, the City's Incident Management Team (IMT) successfully closed 2,231 cases dealing with such calls. While the public may wonder what "closed" entails, the city explains that this means the reported issue was either resolved, compliance was achieved, compliance was achieved or the issue had resolved itself upon inspection by city staff. In the realm of direct aid, the City’s Department of Community Response managed to enroll 42 individuals into databases that are shared locally, in a bid to match them with shelters and other much-needed resources.
However, the City's report shows no new placements in their Roseville Road campus or the Outreach and Engagement Center, both facilities designed to serve the homeless community. As of December 3, the report highlights that both the Roseville Road campus and the Outreach and Engagement Center were at full capacity, with no Pallet homes or trailers available at the former and 17 spaces available at the latter. For other shelters funded by the City, which do not include the Roseville Road campus or the OEC, there was an average of 25 openings available.
Cleaning efforts also formed part of the city’s response, with crews removing 140,370 pounds of trash over a week. For those interested in more in-depth insights, or perhaps even historical data, the city maintains a data dashboard that tracks the IMT's weekly progress going back to September 2023. This dashboard provides cumulative figures for outreach, the status of compliance efforts and the scale of cleanup undertakings. The public can stay informed on the management of the city's homelessness crisis and observe the tangible steps being undertaken to ameliorate the same, through these transparent reports.
