This morning, the California State Capitol in Sacramento, as well as neighboring state buildings, were swiftly evacuated following an unconfirmed email threat. Staff and legislators were directed to vacate the premises and to proceed with their responsibilities from remote locations while law enforcement conducted a thorough examination of the potential danger. According to ABC10, the Deputy Secretary of the Senate Human Resources issued the evacuation directive just before 9 a.m. this morning.
The advice, which extended to the Legislative Swing Space and the Legislative Office Building on O Street, comes during a time when the Legislature is on recess—a period meant to allow lawmakers time to refocus before taking their seats on January 6, 2025. Adding concern, is the fact that the California Highway Patrol, tasked with the Capitol's security, began their investigation after receiving the threat early in the day. They are now sweeping the Capitol to validate the threat's credibility, as reported by KCRA 3.
The evacuation disrupted what would have otherwise been a day of learning for local schoolchildren. Two fourth-grade classes from Theodore Judah Elementary were turned away from their scheduled Capitol tour, as observed by KCRA 3's Melanie Wingo on-site. In recent months, this is not the first time that the Capitol has faced such disruptions. Back in May, a similar evacuation occurred due to a menacing package that falsely claimed to contain anthrax, and again in November 2023, following credible threats relating gunfire incidents at multiple nearby locations.
These repeated instances have become a worrisome pattern for state officials and the public alike, resonating with unsettling dissonance amidst the broader discourse of public safety and civil order. Meanwhile, staffers have been instructed to maintain government functions from a distance, as the CHP remains vigilant in ensuring any potential harm is preemptively quelled. As the situation remains active, further details surrounding the nature and source of the email threat are expected to emerge, and citizens are encouraged to stay informed through ongoing updates.
