The San Antonio City Council has made changes to the Small Business Economic Development Advocacy ordinance, which supports local businesses. The amendment was approved with a 7-4 vote during Thursday's City Council A Session, according to the City of San Antonio.
Councilmember Whyte supported the Small Business Economic Development Advocacy program amendments and thanked City staff and Small Business Economic Development Advocacy board members, including District 10 representative Roy Schauffele, for their "tireless efforts." He emphasized that the "ultimate goal of SBEDA is to make itself unnecessary over time," aiming for a strong local business community. Looking ahead, he emphasized the need to track which contractors receive City work to ensure small businesses benefit. "Heading into 2025, the City must continue to keep an eye on which contractors are receiving City work to ensure that the goals of our SBEDA program continue to be met and small businesses benefit," he said, as stated by the City of San Antonio.
A review in 2025 will look at how the Small Business Economic Development Advocacy program has progressed. The City Council's decision to amend the program shows an awareness of changing needs and a commitment to meeting legal requirements that affect small businesses. Whyte stated, "going forward it should strive to only use contractors that are consistently meeting our expectations in this regard," stressing the council's focus on holding contractors accountable, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
