The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) has an influx of guinea pigs available for adoption as the New Year approaches. A total of 135 of these small furry creatures are seeking homes, with 51 coming from an untimely situation where their owner passed away in an RV in Ocean Beach. Upon rescue by the Humane Law Enforcement team on December 18, these guinea pigs joined others at the SDHS facilities and are reported to be in good health.
According to a social media post by the San Diego Humane Society, these creatures have been thoroughly evaluated and treated medical-wise and are now ready to find new homes. Potential adopters have the option to adopt the guinea pigs singly or in pairs, and all have been spayed or neutered to prevent further unplanned litters.
The adoption news is partnered by a report from NBC 7, noting that alongside the guinea pigs from Ocean Beach, there are an additional 84 guinea pigs that are also looking for homes. With 11 of these having been under the care of the SDHS for over three months, the humane society hopes the community will step in to provide loving environments for these pets.
For those interested in adopting, walk-ins are welcome at the four Humane Society locations in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside, and San Diego which conduct adoptions from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shelters, however, will close early on New Year's Eve at 2 p.m. and remain closed on January 1st. Each guinea pig has a $30 adoption fee.
While the SDHS is to handle the current situation on their own, there's a certain level of scrutiny following an issue last year, as reported by NBC 7. Then, hundreds of small animals were transferred from a shelter in San Diego, some unaccounted for, raising concerns about their welfare. This year, "At this time, we have not received any offers for large adoptions or assistance from rescue partners," Jordan Frey of the SDHS told NBC 7, indicating a possible change in how these situations are now being approached.
