In a recent update from the Novato Police Department, a man has been apprehended following a series of retail burglaries. According to a social media post by the department, 27-year-old San Francisco resident Jared Benson was taken into custody last Friday at a Novato Target. Target employees, who knew Benson from prior theft incidents at the establishment, spotted him selecting items and witnessed him leaving without payment, promptly reporting the suspect to the authorities.
An officer who responded to the call quickly arrested Benson, already tied to four other active burglary investigations at the same Target, and an outstanding $10,000 felony warrant for grand theft from the Morgan Hill Police Department. During the investigation, it was confirmed that Benson stole merchandise valued at over $2,000 during the recent incident.
After being taken to the Police Department for an interview with a detective, Benson was charged and booked into the Marin County Jail on five separate counts of burglary, in addition to the warrant. The Novato Police Department extended their thanks to the vigilant Target staff and the witnesses who took action by reporting the ongoing incidents, emphasizing the role of community cooperation in resolving such cases.
To assist the public in keeping safe during the shopping season, the Novato Police offered a series of crime prevention tips. These included being aware of one's surroundings, avoiding isolated spots, being cautious when using ATMs, and ensuring valuables are not visible. When shopping with children, parents are advised to instruct them to find a store clerk or security guard should they become separated. The department reminds everyone to report suspicious activities immediately by calling their non-emergency line or utilizing the online report system, saving 9-1-1 for emergencies.
