In a move that mixes civic duty with holiday cheer, Dormont Borough received a timely delivery of new park equipment at Beggs Snyder Park, courtesy of none other than Santa Claus. As residents in Dormont unwrapped presents by the tree, local kids got a bigger surprise waiting at their renovated playground.
In October, Dormont’s longstanding safety issues prompted the demolition of playgrounds in three parks, including two at Dormont Park and one at Beggs Snyder Park. The insurance company deemed the structures unsafe, so the Borough had to strip the spaces down to the bare bones. However, the Borough of Dormont didn't let the matter drop as swiftly as the autumn leaves. According to WPXI, they quickly purchased and installed new equipment at Beggs Snyder Park.
The funds for these projects aren't just coming from the bottomless sack of North Pole magic. Over $100,000 of the playground's price tag was allocated for the spanking new three-piece set with a slide; further financial backing for a replacement of the demolished Castle Playground arose from over $25,000 in private donations and a hefty $600,000 in public funding, as detailed by CBS News Pittsburgh.
"Giving children what they want and what they need on Christmas is what it's all about," Dormont Borough Manager John Stinner stated, as per CBS News Pittsburgh in a recent interview. Indeed, the sentiment was echoed by Dormont Council President Jen Mazzocco, who acknowledged residents’ disappointment in the park closures. "So, to have it delivered for the new year is just awesome. When we have those mild days in January, we'll be able to enjoy it," said Mazzocco.
Santa’s appearance alongside the manufacturer to deliver equipment to Public Works employees, as reported by WPXI, added a festive touch. While Santa usually focuses on toys, this year, Dormont’s children will enjoy the benefits of his expanded interests for years.
