The multi-county search for what was reported as a downed aircraft in the Monongahela River near Ronco, Fayette County, has been called off after an extensive two-day operation yielded no evidence to support the initial claim. According to WPXI, emergency crews, pulling together resources from Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties, responded to a 911 call placed on Friday that suggested a small aircraft may have sunk into the Monongahela River, mobilizing a search that included boats, underwater sonar, and drones.
The operation expanded rapidly and incorporated technical assistance from outside the immediate response area, "There's a lot of capabilities that our crews in this area do not have, so we had to call outside the county," Adah Volunteer Fire Department Chief LC Otto stated in an interview, as per CBS News, in the search that initially emerged as an emergency response they went back to the river yesterday with a more organized plan and divers were also brought in to explore an "area of interest" identified by the sonar.
However, the "area of interest" did not provide the answers the teams sought after Greene County officials declared an end to the search when no trace of the reported aircraft was discovered, even after deploying side scan sonar to examine the vicinity meticulously. The Fayette County district attorney confirmed that the investigation remains open. However, no further evidence had materialized, and there have been no reports of missing persons connected to the incident, which complicates the narrative about the exact happenings at the river on that day.
Residents with any information that might illuminate the situation are encouraged to contact local authorities immediately as the mystery of the reported crash lingers.
