The Monongahela River in Fayette County continues to be the focus of a meticulous search operation as authorities probe for signs of a potential small aircraft accident. According to WPXI, the operation, encompassing a stretch near Masontown, resumed today after being suspended the previous evening due to unforgiving weather and the onset of darkness. The Adah Volunteer Fire Department indicated that an "area of interest" had been identified on the Fayette County side of the river, necessitating further investigation.
Despite the resurgence of efforts over the weekend, the search teams were yet to uncover a plane as the operation unfolded physically. The endeavor has scoured the river's waters and the adjacent woodland and hillsides, with assistance spanning Fayette and Greene counties. As CBS News Pittsburgh reported, the collaborative search also included aerial support from a helicopter and a volunteer in a private plane, ramping up the scrutiny of the expansive search zone.
The impetus for this sizable search began with a 911 call, received around 12:45 p.m. yesterday, reporting the sighting of a small plane dipping towards the river but not reemerging. Notwithstanding these alarming reports, no missing person or aircraft was logged, and no mayday signals were detected, complicating the search context.
