Seattle's community-led Generational Wealth Initiative marked its second anniversary this autumn, celebrating a swell of grassroots efforts aimed at fostering local economic resilience and racial equity. The initiative, stemming from a drive for racial justice, has been a channel for direct investments in community-led projects. A central part of this movement has included partnerships with entities like the Social Justice Fund and engagement in participatory research to bridge the city’s racial wealth divide, according to the city's official website.

Earlier established in June 2022, the Community Roundtable has become a melting pot for voices across the spectrum – from local business owners to housing developers. Although some members were already part of the city's equity-focused advisory groups, this initiative brought new faces to the forefront of city engagement. All with a shared goal — to root economic development in practices that ensure the creators of wealth actually get to hold on to it, according to the official announcement.

Nine pilot projects have received the green light, each backed by community-driven strategies for wealth building. These initiatives range from empowering Black homeowners to retain assets, launching entrepreneurial incubators for Latinx creatives, to designing cooperative childcare services that provide both essential services and equitable wealth distribution.

Among these projects, the Central Area Collaborative has been instrumental in developing a tailored community wealth-building model, successfully securing a substantial $1.2 million in funding for local businesses. Running parallel, the Resource Equity Association has helped African American homeowners in maximizing asset retention, as noted by the City of Seattle Front Porch.
