The Seattle Office of Labor Standards (OLS) is putting out a call for proposals, with a $1.1 million Business Outreach and Education Fund (BOEF) on the table. The OLS is eager to partner with business associations, chambers of commerce, community-based organizations (CBOs), private businesses, and nonprofits to boost labor standards outreach and education among local companies, focusing on those in BIPOC communities. The initiative is set up to amplify knowledge about labor laws, foster trust and cooperation between the OLS and the business sector, and enhance compliance, especially with small businesses, according to an announcement from the City of Seattle.

"Finding trusted organizations and using dedicated funding to support them are essential elements in directly reaching small business owners and educating them about Seattle’s labor laws. Effective business outreach and education are vital to the long-term success of OLS’ implementation efforts. The partnerships funded by the BOEF ensure that small business owners understand their responsibilities, comply with Seattle labor standards, and promote equitable workplaces. By respecting workers’ rights and ensuring businesses adhere to labor laws, we cultivate a stronger economic environment for the entire city," OLS Director Steven Marchese shared, as the City of Seattle news release reported. He sees the funding as a cornerstone for not just regulatory compliance but also as an investment in a fairer economy.

Prospective applicants can vie for a 24-month contract, effective May 1, 2025, and not winding down until April 30, 2027. The first year’s slice of the funding is pegged at $550,000, repeating the amount for the following year. However, this all hinges on the City Council’s budget adoption for the fiscal years 2026 and 2027. Those interested in learning more about the specifics of the RFP and how to apply can visit the OLS website for guidance, with the proposal window open today until January 23, 2025.
