Seattle is moving forward with its plan for a more sustainable future by involving community members and labor unions in shaping the city's environmental strategies. Recently, the Green New Deal Oversight Board held five community meetings, bringing together diverse groups like union workers, social justice advocates, and young activists. These discussions focused on finding ways to address the climate challenges impacting Seattle. The feedback from these sessions will help guide the city's climate policies and investments, according to the report on the City of Seattle Official website.

Among the key participants, MLK Labor, representing a diverse workforce from King County, conducted sessions highlighting how their livelihoods have been adversely affected by climate change. Workers from trades as varied as education to construction divulged the struggles posed by extreme weather conditions. Daily chores on the job have been, by the encroaching extreme weather, bagged with risks and challenges galore.

Dialogues within these meetings didn't just diagnose the problems but also ventured into resolutions such as the implementation of workplace protections against the hazards of heat and pollution. Commendation for these discussions was extended by OSE Director Jessyn Farrell, who acknowledged the invaluable insights of the labor force and their contribution to shaping climate policy, as described in the GreenSpace Seattle's report.

At the same time, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle brought together youth and social justice advocates to discuss the challenges faced by frontline communities. These talks highlighted how climate change makes existing inequalities worse, especially for marginalized groups. They identified issues like how communities of color often suffer more from environmental hazards. Proposed solutions include stronger affordable housing and better local food systems to help communities build resilience against climate change.

The recommendations from these community meetings will be included in a report by OSE and the Oversight Board, set to be released next year. According to GreenSpace Seattle, these insights will guide the Board in deciding where to invest and what policies to propose for the city. They will also help shape the city's overall climate action plan.

Since its 2019 Green New Deal Resolution, Seattle has led the way in climate action, aiming to eliminate city climate pollution by 2030. The Oversight Board plays a key role in making sure this goal reflects the experiences and expertise of those most affected by climate and environmental injustices, especially in communities of color.
