Seattle's youth seeking real-world skills and employment support can look to the Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP) which is reshaping futures through its year-round pre-employment program, Learn and Earn. Aimed at individuals aged 16 to 24 from income-qualifying households, SYEP addresses the inequities evident in early career development, providing critical stepping stones towards gainful and stable employment. The Seattle Human Services Department explains that through this initiative, participants receive more than just job training—they embark on a journey of personal and professional growth, bolstering the foundation for their future careers.
The Learn and Earn program splits into two key components: Foundations and Pathways. Foundations is geared towards those new to the workforce, equipping them with essential job skills through workshops on topics such as networking as well as how to craft a compelling resume and cover letter. Participants not only receive valuable knowledge but also earn a monthly stipend. Pathways, meanwhile, is tailored for those with a clear career sector in mind, offering advanced job readiness workshops, job shadowing, and professional interviews, along with a stipend, as per the Seattle Human Services Department's descriptions.
Starting January 2025, SYEP is expanding to offer specialized tracks including Nursing, Software Development, and a General Pathway for a variety of careers. The Nursing Pathway, in collaboration with Swedish Medical Center, prepares young adults for the NA-C exam with hands-on experience. The Software Development Pathway, via a partnership with Computing for All, immerses participants in coding and tech, while the General Pathway provides specialized training and developmental workshops.
Feedback from participants underscores the program’s impact. “I think SYEP is going very well! I find this a comfortable and enjoyable space where I can learn while having fun,” stated Michelle in a comment shared by the Seattle Human Services Department. Another participant, Arianne noted, “What is going well for me in SYEP is the content we learn in the workshops appl[ies] to my school life. I find myself using the tools given to us in SYEP [at school].” Applications for the Pathways Program are open until Friday, with eligibility criteria including age requirements, residency or school attendance within Seattle, and household income restrictions.
For Seattle's youth poised at the crossroads of education and employment, SYEP's Learn and Earn program is more than a lifeline—it is a lighthouse guiding them towards a horizon of opportunities, where their potential can transcend the bounds of their immediate circumstances, and where their aspirations can transform into tangible outcomes.
