A semi-truck driver has been arrested following a collision with a Michigan State Police cruiser on I-75. The incident took place yesterday morning near the 11 Mile Road ramp as troopers were engaged in a multi-car crash investigation. FOX 2 Detroit reported the crash resulted in several vehicles being damaged, and one state trooper was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Attempting to bypass slowing traffic, the semi-driver, arrested for reckless driving, lost control while moving into the left lane, already occupied by state troopers with their emergency lights on. The incident unfolded as the semi first hit a patrol car, sending it flying over 100 yards and colliding into another cruiser, as reported by MLive. The remaining two troopers narrowly escaped harm by leaping over the median wall.
Several Michigan State Police vehicles sustained major damage from the semi-truck's trajectory, including a third vehicle involved in the initial crash. Both of the officers involved managed to avoid the semi, which nearly struck them as well. The hospitalized trooper was later released, having sustained only minor injuries.
In the aftermath of the collision, officers voiced concerns over driving behaviors that contribute to such incidents. "This incident had everything we have been talking about this last month," stated F/Lt Mike Shaw in a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit. Shaw highlighted issues such as risky driving, speeding, drivers failing to move aside for emergency vehicles, and pedestrians encroaching on freeway ramps to capture photos for social media. The recurrence of such incidents reinforces ongoing appeals from authorities urging the public to slow down, move over, drive safely, and avoid walking on freeways.
The investigation into this near-fatal accident temporarily shut down the freeway, but it has since reopened. The semi-truck driver is facing charges of reckless driving. Traffic on I-75 has returned to normal following the cleanup and investigative efforts.
