At a recent arraignment hearing in Maricopa County Superior Court, Sencere Hayes, 22, pled not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and auto theft in connection with the death of Tempe woman Mercedes Vega. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, Hayes is accused of the heinous murder of Vega, whose body was found in a burning car in April 2023.
The courtroom scene was emotionally charged as Vega’s parents confronted the man accused of taking their daughter's life. Erika Pillsbury, Vega's mother, expressed to 12 News, "As soon as I heard them call his name, all I wanted to do was just look him in the face."
Mercedes Vega was last seen alive on surveillance footage from her apartment complex before her tormented body was discovered. The Pillsburys have been advocating fiercely for justice, and despite initial concerns regarding the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office's handling of the investigation, they are focusing on the path ahead. The suspect Hayes was extradited to Arizona from Tennessee, where he was apprehended in November, to face the charges levied against him. Still, MCSO has signaled that this is but one piece of a larger puzzle with more arrests expected, possibly connecting even broader circles of criminality and violence within this tragic web.
The investigation is ongoing and MCSO suggests more individuals may be involved. According to 12 News, there seems to be a possibly significant link between the suspect and another individual, Cudjoe Young, both hailing from the same town in Tennessee and both implicated in separate incidents of violence against Vega. Hayes's charges place him at the center of this crime which now, takes on even darker undertones of possible retribution or conspiracy.
