Sevier County in Tennessee is currently grappling with multiple brush fires, necessitating the response of various firefighting teams. The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department and other agencies have been deployed to tackle these exigent blazes, as reported by WVLT News. Conditions described as "steep and treacherous" have exacerbated the firefighting efforts. One of the fires, near the Knox and Sevier county line on Creswell Ridge, threatened residential structures before crews managed to contain it.
According to information obtained by WATE, Sevier County's Emergency Management Agency has declared an Elevated Fire Danger for the entire area today, leading to a suspension of Burn Permits. The emergency has sparked proactive responses across multiple locations, including Walden's Creek near Shagbark where the fire is estimated to have engulfed 35 acres and necessitated evacuation of nearby structures.
Moving quickly, the Sevier County Wildland Task Force and other emergency personnel responded to another blaze on Overholt Trail, which, in less than an hour, leapt from an estimated size of eight acres to a large 20-acre inferno. This particular fire mobilized more than 70 people into the night to combat its spread, as WVLT News documented.
Adding to the struggle, Sevier County Fire & Rescue is monitoring and working on additional sites, including a three-acre fire on Flat Branch Road and Spur. With an elevated fire danger alert having been issued, WBIR reports that the public has been urged to avoid traveling through affected areas to allow space for emergency vehicle traffic. Ongoing investigations are in place to determine the causes of the fires.
The local community has been asked to register for CodeRED emergency alerts and to heed the restrictions placed by authorities. Adjacent Cocke County Fire Department, since 3 a.m. today, has been dispatching firefighters, tankers, and brush trucks to assist Sevier County crews.
