The chaos began in the early hours when two semi-trucks overturned near the Sprinkle Road exit in Kalamazoo, resulting in a closure of the eastbound lanes. As reported by MLive, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety confirmed that traffic was redirected off the interstate, although no injuries were reported in this incident.
Further mishaps continued as travelers encountered icy conditions leading to more incidents, including one significant semi-truck crash near the Portage Road exit. This event compounded the traffic issues, causing a substantial backup stretching down to Sprinkle Road. As per an account by Ann Marie Drake, a passenger who came upon a crash, "Most people were driving cautiously, but it’s so icy that the moment you tap the brakes, you start sliding," MLive reported. Information from WWMT noted that it took around an hour for the scene to be cleared following the incident near Sprinkle Road.
The snowy assault didn't let up, with law enforcement emphasizing driver responsibility in hazardous weather. "The onus of maintaining control of your vehicle is on the driver in the state of Michigan at all times," DuWayne Robinson, a Public Information Officer for Michigan State Police's 5th District, articulated in an interview by WZZM13. Robinson added that despite considering warnings about driving conditions, authorities cited several individuals for driving too fast for conditions.
