An incident struck southeast Houston yesterday morning when a 15-year-old boy, identified as Milby High School student Sergio Rodriguez, was killed by an oncoming train. The fatal accident occurred around 7:35 a.m. near the intersection of 2000 Broadway St. and Galveston Road as the teen attempted to cross train tracks on his way to school. Despite the railroad crossing arms being down and lights flashing, the teenager was hit by a moving Union Pacific train and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to KHOU.
Residents have voiced their concerns, calling for increased safety measures to prevent such accidents. Lifelong Houstonians like Daniel Perez, who lives nearby, assert that children frequently cross at this location when trains stop, indicating an ongoing risk that has now resulted in the loss of an young life. "It’s dangerous for our kids, they have to put more security I think," stated Vanessa Valdez, another southeast Houston resident, in an interview with KPRC 2. In response to this incident, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) deployed its crisis response team to offer support to affected students and staff.
Local authorities and political figures have responded to the community's concerns following the incident. Houston Police stated that a patrol officer was on the scene but did not have a clear view of the accident, which has been part of a broader discussion about infrastructure and public safety. In response to the tragedy, Union Pacific issued a statement offering condolences to the victim's family and confirmed its cooperation with the community and ongoing investigations.
Political leaders expressed not just condolences but a commitment to action. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, who stated, "I am calling for a full investigation to understand what led to this tragedy and to identify ways to enhance safety in our communities," and Commissioner Adrian Garcia, who addressed the issue of overall safety around the regional railroads, are both pushing for practical solutions. "We are grieving the death of a young man in Precinct 2– a Milby High School student whose death this morning was related to one of the many train lines in Houston’s East End," Commissioner Garcia said, as per KPRC 2.
Amidst the mourning, Rodriguez's family has established a GoFundMe to cover final expenses. Friends of Rodriguez, like Joe Marin, who normally walked with him to school, are struggling with the weight of the incident. "I could have been there helping him," Marin told KHOU.
