Scott MacKenzie, from Cottrellville, St. Clair County, was surprised to find his Powerball ticket was worth $200,000 instead of the $50,000 he expected. He matched four white balls and the Powerball in the November 30 drawing (04-24-29-39-63, PB: 25), and his prize was quadrupled to $200,000 with the "Power Play" option, according to CBS News Detroit.
The winning ticket was bought at Buscemi's in Chesterfield, at 54800 North Gratiot Avenue. "After the drawing, I took my ticket to a retailer to check it and thought maybe I'd won $1,500 or a smaller prize over $600 after getting a message to file a claim at the Lottery office," MacKenzie said. He later called his sister, and they found out the ticket's true value, which he called a "we were both shocked and excited! Winning is a huge blessing that came just in time for the holidays," as reported by Michigan Lottery Connect.
After claiming his prize, MacKenzie plans to take a vacation, continue playing Powerball, and save the rest of his winnings. Powerball tickets cost $2, with an option to add "Power Play" for an additional $1, which can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times. There's also the "Double Play" option, offering a chance to win a second prize of up to $10 million. Drawings are held three times a week—on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.—and are available in 45 states, Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. You can watch the live draws on the Powerball website, as stated by ClickOnDetroit.
