The Mayor's Literacy Challenge in Surprise, Arizona is now open for registration. The city-wide event starts on Wednesday next week and runs through February 15, encouraging readers of all ages to participate and compete for prizes. Participants are challenged to read for 700 minutes during the event, as per City of Surprise website.
Elementary school students in grades one through six have a chance to win a pizza party for their entire grade. Local elementary, middle, and high schools can compete for the traveling trophy, with the winner determined by the highest total reading minutes. Participants should include their school and grade level during registration.
Prizes are available for all age groups. Participants will earn rewards after every 100-minute reading milestone, including Spring Training tickets, local business coupons, and raffle tickets. Children ages five to 11 will receive a free book, teens aged 12 to 17 will get a Surprise Public Library traveling speaker, and adults will receive a library book bag.
The Surprise Public Library System (SPLS) is handling prize redemption at its locations. To register for the Mayor's Literacy Challenge or learn more about prizes and requirements, participants can visit the official webpage. Special events, including storytimes and games, will be held on Saturday next week at three local libraries: Hollyhock, Surprise Regional, and Asante. The closing party will take place on February 15 at Hollyhock Library.
This year, the challenge includes Surprise Stories, a collection of audio stories available on the SPLS website. Participants can earn minutes by listening to these stories, allowing those who can't physically read a book to still contribute. For more information, contact [email protected] or follow SPLS on social media for updates.
