The state of Texas reports a decline of over 87% in illegal crossings, attributing this decrease to security efforts, which are now being supplemented by the billboard campaign.
The Governor's Office states that over 529,700 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 49,600 criminal arrests have been made since the start of Operation Lone Star, with the campaign also yielding seizures of over 604 million lethal doses of fentanyl. To further drive home the point, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Texas National Guard have taken to relocate, rather than to slowly relocate, over 119,400 migrants across various sanctuary cities since April 2022, marking a state-led response to what they perceive as the federal government's lackluster border policies.
Strategically placed in parts of Central America and Mexico, over 40 billboards featuring warnings in multiple languages aim to convey the dangers of human trafficking. Stories of danger and exploitation are meant to deter potential migrants from entering through Texas illegally. Abbott's approach continues Texas' aggressive posture on immigration, utilizing a mix of technology, physical barriers, and public information campaigns to manage the situation.
Operation Lone Star has notably been multifaceted, including tracking operations such as those of DPS K-9s Shark and Bona, who pursued over 16 miles to apprehend two illegal immigrants in Maverick County. Abott took to the social platform X, previously known as Twitter, to champion Texas's efforts as a national model for border security, stating that the state will cooperate with the incoming Trump Administration to ensure American safety. Despite these efforts, the official narrative focuses sharply on the notion that current federal policies continue to put American lives at risk.
While the state-led actions have garnered attention, the pursuit of safety remains a priority for Texas law enforcement. For instance, soldiers from the Texas National Guard apprehended three individuals beneath an international bridge after a security team using advanced equipment spotted them. It is part of an ongoing surveillance strategy designed to deter and respond to instances of illegal entry into the United States.
