In what might seem like a ceaseless upward trajectory, Texas has made headlines again in 2024 for its economic dominance. Governor Greg Abbott trumpeted the state's success in a recent statement discussing the numerous accolades awarded to the Lone Star State, including its ranking as the Best State for Business for the 20th consecutive year and its receipt of the Gold Shovel Award for attracting job-creating investments, according to the Office of the Texas Governor.
"Texas is the leading economy in the United States because we move at the speed of business," Abbott stated. This year, he spearheaded two new state initiatives: the Texas Space Commission and the Governor's Small Business Freedom Council, aimed at fostering economic growth and job creation. Additionally, despite a global landscape often marred by economic uncertainty, Texas' position as the eighth largest economy in the world seems secure, with intentions to slash governmental regulations purportedly holding businesses back in 2025, as stated by the Office of the Texas Governor.
The Texas Space Commission, launched at NASA's Johnson Space Center, intends to propel the state to the forefront of space innovation. "As we look into the future of space, one thing is clear: those who reach for the stars do so from the great state of Texas," Abbott proclaimed. The Commission aims to blend space exploration with the state's economy and is backed by a board of nine, administering a fund for aerospace and aeronautics research initiatives, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.
According to the Office of the Texas Governor, Texas's appeal stems from its policies favoring economic growth; there is no corporate income tax and no personal income tax, which, Abbott suggests, acts as a magnet for businesses and entrepreneurs. Area Development magazine's 11th Gold Shovel Award only underscores the state's effectiveness in fostering a fertile ground for businesses.
Further diving into the specifics, earlier this month saw the launch of the Governor's Small Business Freedom Council. Abbott's office issued a directive for state agencies to come forward with recommendations to eliminate superfluous rules and regulations. "One of my priorities as Governor is to empower small business owners and entrepreneurs by providing the best environment for small business growth," Abbott wrote in a letter seeking the business community's input. The state's agencies' recommendations are expected by January 13, 2025, with the Council set to provide a subsequent report for action, as per the Office of the Texas Governor.
