A third teenager has been implicated in the October homicide of 18-year-old Zackary Evan Rieken in south Charlotte, bringing new facets to a narrative of crime and consequence. Maximillian Ruggiero, 18, now finds himself ensnared by the law, facing first-degree murder among other charges, as reported by QC News.
The fateful incident, which seized a young life just before the stroke of midnight on October 25 on James Blakeney Ave, involved a drug deal that veered into fatal violence, according to doorbell surveillance footage that depicted the deadly series of events that led to Rieken's car crashing into a tree after being shot, this was captured near Rea Road, as covered by WSOCTV.
In a turn that cast further shadows on the act, it is alleged that Ruggiero, who had previously engaged in commerce with the victim for marijuana, harbored a debt to Rieken and had even once robbed him, such acts setting a grim preamble to the subsequent robbery and murder, as documented by detectives and detailed by QC News.
The gravitas of these moments found a counter in the lamentations that echoed at a vigil where Rieken's mother, Chandra Rieken, expressed the magnitude of her loss, saying, "His death continues to take my breath away," and, "It hurts so much to know that he is gone," poignant words that resonated beyond that gathering and were captured by WCNC; alongside Ruggiero, two other youngsters, a 17-year-old and 18-year-old Sanjie A’Nee Johnson, find themselves tethered to the charge of murder, entangled in a web of choices that severed possibilities and truncated a life that once was.
With Ruggiero now in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office since Tuesday, and a court denying his bond. Those with information are urged to come forth and aid in the tapestry of justice, with Charlotte Crime Stoppers and the homicide detectives keeping their lines open, as noted by WCNC.
