Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy on Saturday, joining Rashaan Salaam, who won it in 1994, in Colorado Buffaloes history. Hunter's impressive season, with 31 tackles, four interceptions, and 21 catches for 20 or more yards, helped him secure the award, as detailed by The Coloradoan.
According to KSAT, Hunter confirmed he would play in the Alamo Bowl, breaking the trend of NFL Draft prospects sitting out such games. He and teammate quarterback Shedeur Sanders talked about the importance of playing in a bowl game, with Hunter saying, "I'm thankful being able to play another game, boy." His performance will be a key focus when Colorado plays the BYU Cougars on Saturday next week at the Alamodome.
Past Heisman winners have played in the Alamo Bowl, with Robert Griffin III leading the way in 2011. He made a post-award appearance, ending with a thrilling 67-56 win for Baylor over Washington. Hunter will be just the second player to win the Heisman and play in the Alamo Bowl in the same season, following Griffin's example.
Notably missing from this list of dual achievements are Charles Woodson, Eric Crouch, and Marcus Mariota, who all played in the Alamo Bowl before winning the Heisman, as KSAT reports. For example, Crouch's impressive 2000 performance, where he rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, became a memorable moment before he won the Heisman the following year.
